[edit] Booting from DVD
Turn on the computer where you want to install SoL 25 and insert the freshly burned SoL 25 DVD into the DVD drive. Make sure your BIOS is configured so that it is able to boot from the DVD drive. After a short while, the Boot Menu will appear, there choose "Install SoL 25.00" to start the installer. Alternatively, at this point you have the option of booting the Diskless Mode as well as Memtest.
[edit] Starting the Installer
The installer will need some time to start. When it is ready, you will see the welcome screen. Throughout the installer, help texts are available to assist you with more detailed explanations about what you can do and how you can do it.
[edit] Basic Setup
In the installer welcome screen, you may choose the installer language (currently English or German) and continue to the Basic Setup. Here you have to set the host- and domainname as well as the passwords for the root and sshlogin users in order to continue. The other fields are optional, however, if you want your machine to be able to have network access (which you most probably will on a server machine), you are advised to fill out the other fields as well.
[edit] Disk Setup
When you are done with the basic setup, you will reach the summary and may proceed to the Disk Setup. If there is more than one disk in your system, you will be taken to the RAID Setup, otherwise you will go straight to the Layout Selection. Note that there will be done no harm to any of the disks until you click on "Install SoL" at the very end of the disk setup. Also, you may always reset the disks to the state the system found them at boot time, to start your disk configuration from scratch.
[edit] Raid Setup
In the RAID Setup, you may build RAID 1 disks (these are actually pseudo-disks) on which you may assign partitions later on. These may consist of a maximum of two actual RAID disks and a maximum of one spare disk. When you are done with the RAID setup, the next step will be the Layout Selection.
[edit] Layout Selection
The Layout Selection lets you choose between the Flat Layout (only one partition, the root partition "/") and the Split Layout (three partitions: "/", "/"etc and "/var"). The Split Layout has the advantage that configuration and data are separated from the system and are easy to exchange, also you may mount the root partition read-only.
[edit] Assign Partitions
After you have chosen the layout, you have to assign one (Flat Layout) or three (Split Layout) mountpoints to physical or pseudo-RAID-disks, either on existing partitions or into the free space. When you create partitions in the free space, you can specify the size of the new partition. The minimum partition sizes are 10 GB for the root partition "/", 200 MB for the "/etc" partition and 10 GB for the "/var" partition. The maximum partition size is the size of the free space on the disk, obviously. You may also delete partitions at this point.
Note that only partitions that fulfill the size requirements may be selected at this stage! Also, extended partitions are excluded from the selection as well for security reasons.
[edit] Install!
When you are done with the Disk Setup, you will once again see a summary, and if everything looks correct, click on "Install SoL". Now sit back, relax, get a cup of coffee (we especially recommend this step :) ),... as you wait and watch SoL 25 installing on your machine. Normally, a SoL 25 installation should take around 30 minutes. Factors like the speed of your machine, your DVD drive, your network card, LAN congestion, sun flares and star alignment may all influence the duration of the installation.
[edit] Reboot
When the installation has completed, it will say so, also the "Reboot system" button is a good indicator that the installation is done. When you click on it, the system will reboot (surprise, surprise) after a few seconds. Remember to remove the DVD from the drive in order to boot your system.
[edit] What now?
You will most probably want to continue with some configuration.
